10 greatest Serbian sport successes
The list of sports successes of our national team is long and it is very hard to distinguish which success is the biggest and most important one. We present you a list of 10 events, individuals and selections that marked the history of Serbian sport, and the criteria we were guided were primarily the size and importance of the championships, as well as the continuity of good results in big competitions.
Serbia, although a territorially small country, which in financial and political terms cannot match the world powers, has always stood in front of the best and most successful teams in sports. When you ask the citizens of Serbia who in their opinion is the most popular sport in Serbia, you will get a wide range of answers, because it seems that we are good in every sport and that each has a large fan base. The reason for this is certainly successful athletes, their results and trophies that they won at European, as well as at world and Olympic competitions. The famous balcony in front of the City Hall has become a symbol of sports successes and various celebrations. Many athletes were welcomed in front of him, and tens of thousands of citizens wearing t-shirts and jerseys chanted their names, and millions joined in their homes in front of the TV watching their performances.
Take a look at our list of the 10 largest events, individuals and selections that marked the history of Serbian sports:
10. Golden basketball players
Serbia has always been one of the best European and world teams, but primarily in men's basketball. However, in 2015, a real sensation at the European championship took place and the squad selected by selector Marina Maljković, won the continental gold. Overwhelmed and strongly motivated by this success, our female basketball players went on to the Olympic Games in Rio all the way to the medal – bronze - and thus rounded up a series of great results for this extraordinary generation.
9. Volleyball (male and female)
The only collective sport in Serbia where we can be proud of fantastic results in both men's and women's competitions is volleyball. The boys first welcomed us in 1998 (then as FR Yugoslavia) at the World Cup in Japan, when they won the silver medal. And already at the next big competition, they made it to the ultimate success - gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. A series of good results continued a year later when they were the best on the old continent, and European gold did not miss them in 2011. Our women's selection is also double European champion - they were best in 2011 and 2017. The greatest success at the World Cup came in 2006 when they were bronze, and from the Olympic Games in Rio, they returned with silver around the neck. Just after our post was released, our fantastic female team made the impossible possible and became world champion and marked a new fantastic achievement for serbian sports.
8. Sale Djordjevics legendary three pointer
After the departure of Divac, Paspalj, Grbović, Savović and other main players of the previous seasons, Partizan created a new young team for the 1991–92 season, notably Aleksandar Đorđević and Predrag Danilović. Obradović claimed that Partizan again had a very strong team, that the new tandem coaching of Đorđević and Danilović was the best backcourt pair in Europe and that his team would not be an outsider in Euroleague - though hardly anybody of the basketball experts believed him.
Partizan finished the competition in the group stage in the Euroleague in fourth place with nine wins and five defeats - nobody had them on the radar. Though they bravely fought via Bologna their way through to the Final 4. In the F4 Partizan defeated in very dramatic games the two strongest teams back then in Europe Milan and Joventut - everybody in Serbia knows Sales three pointer - rest is history.
7. Olympic success of Milica Mandic
The first gold medal at the Olympic Games for Independent Serbia was won by Milica Mandic in London in 2012. That year, it seems that Taekwondo became the number 1 sport in Serbia, and Milica became a role model and inspiration for many boys and girls who started to exercise this sport. Of course, we must not forget the world gold medal won last year, as well as the three European silver medals in 2012, 2014 and 2016.
6. Ivana Spanovic
In addition to numerous medals, the Serbian national team can be proud of the fact that she is the best athlete in Serbia in the last few decades. It all began with the junior world gold in 2008, continued with gold at the Universiade in Belgrade the following year, and crowned with numerous medals in senior competitions. Her greatest success remains for now the Indoor World Championship title this year, despite that there are four medals in the world championships, one silver and three bronze (two in the open). At the championships of Europe, there are three gold (two indoors) and one silver. Even the Olympic Games in Rome did not go without medals, then Ivana "jumped" to bronze. The national jumping record that Ivana set in 2017 is 7.24 meters.
5. Red Star - European and world champions
When we list the successes and achievements of Serbian athletes, we should certainly not forget to mention the greatest success in the history of club sports in Serbia, which is the winning of the Cup of European Champions (now the Champions League) in football by Red Star Belgrade. In 1991, after a triumph over Grasshoppers, Glasgow Rangers, Dynamo from Dresden and Bayern Munich, Red Star played in the Italian Bari in the final against Olympic Marseille. The Reds celebrated in the penalties against the French team and thus became champions of the old continent. That same year, in Tokyo, the Chilean club Kolo-Kolo was defeated 3:0, so Zvezda became the club's champion in the world. We wish luck to the Reds this season in the Champions League.
4. Golden Eagles
The greatest success in the history of national football in Serbia was made by young footballers at the World Cup for players up to 20 years. In New Zealand, they were better than the Brazilian team with 2:1 in the final. Orlići, after winning the first place in the group, eliminated Hungary in the knockout phase, then they took down USA in the quarter-finals to win the semi-finals against Mali 2:1. In the final, an uncertain fight was seen, and overtime was played, but Serbia, however, came to the roof of the world in 2015.
3. Basketball players
Basketball has always been, apart from football, the most popular sport in Serbia, and certainly, this has certainly contributed to many great results and awards at big competitions. The greatest success in this century is certainly the gold medal from the world championship in Indianapolis in 2002. In addition, silver from the 2014 World Cup was won as well as two silver at the 2009 and 2017 European Championships. At the Olympic Games in Rio, the selection of Serbia won the silver medal. To this, we can add a lot of medals from world and European competitions won since the 1960s since Serbia is the successor to the results achieved under the flag of Yugoslavia.
2. Golden dolphins
The achievements of the Serbian water polo team can hardly be matched by any other national selection around the globe. There is no competition from which the "dolphins" have not returned with a medal around the neck. Serbia is also the owner of all the results achieved in the former state communities in water polo, and we will now mention only the gold medals made under the name of Serbia. Champions of European championships were 2006, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. They won the World Cup in 2009 and 2015 and the Olympic Games in 2016. In addition, they are multiple champions of the World League and the World Cup.
1. Novak Djokovic
When it comes to this man, it is entirely valid for him that it is easier to list what he did not conquer than what he has. Because if we were guided by this logic we would not even say anything since there is no trophy in tennis that Novak Djokovic does not have in his showcase. In 15 years of professional career, he won a total of 71 ATP titles (status October 2018), including 14 at the Grand Slam Tournaments, as well as the 31 Masters Tournament. This season he turned a new page of tennis history by winning the Masters in Cincinnati he won the „Golden Masters” and was the only tennis player to win all nine tournaments in this category. In the first place of the ATP list he spent 223 weeks, and even three times was named the world's best athlete. In addition, he is also the owner of the Bronze medal from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and with the Davis Cup selection of Serbia, he won the famous "bowl" in 2010. We can say with certainty that Novak Djokovic is an athlete who, as a nation, has made us most happy over the past decades, and we can only wish him good health and to keep going on.
Certainly, we must add to this also great achievements achieved by other athletes, such as archers, kayakers, handball players in previous years ... While we wait for some new results that we can add to this list, we suggest that you find at serbianshop.rs some a sport or fan piece for themselves. All sports equipment online in one place, sports t-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, fan scarves, flags, and many other pieces.
