Flags of Serbia through the Ages: Symbolism and History
Welcome to our blog dedicated to the flags of Serbia and its rich historical roots! In this post, we will explore the deeper meaning and symbolism of the flag of Serbia, as well as other interesting flags that have left their mark over the centuries.
Flag of Serbia: Meaning and Symbolism
The flag of Serbia carries deep symbolism that reflects the spirit of the people and the country's rich history. It consists of three horizontal stripes in the colors: red, blue and white. The color red represents courage and love for the motherland, blue represents the sky and freedom, while white symbolizes peace and purity. This combination of colors depicts the strength, courage and hope of the Serbian people.
National, Ordinary and Ceremonial Flag: Differences
Along with the flag of Serbia, there are also different versions of the flag that are used in different situations. The national flag is a commonly used tricolor flag that people use as an expression of their belonging and pride in the country, it does not contain a coat of arms and is made of polyester. The plain flag is the standard version of the flag used every day, contains the country's coat of arms and is made of polyester. The ceremonial flag, on the other hand, has richer details and is used for special occasions and formal ceremonies, contains tassels and is made of satin.

Flags Through History:
Apart from the current flag of Serbia, there are other flags that have left their mark throughout history.
The church flag carries spiritual symbolism and is often used during religious ceremonies. The flag of the Serbian Orthodox Church is a horizontal red, blue, white tricolor with a golden cross and four golden flames in the middle.
The flag of Nemanjić has a special historical significance, representing the dynasty that marked medieval Serbia. The flag, which was worn by the kings of Serbia (from the Nemanjić family), was marked with the heraldic symbol of a red double-headed eagle (spread wings) on a golden (and sometimes red) background.
The regimental flag
The flag is a symbol of military courage and loyalty to the motherland. The regimental flag of the "Army of the Kingdom of Serbia" or the flag of the famous Iron Regiment is a replica of the flag of the Second Infantry Regiment "Knjaz Mihailo" of the first call of the Moravian Division. The original flag ended up as a burial shroud at the funeral of King Peter the First Karađorđević and was buried with him. This flag is made in only one dimension - 75×75 cm.
The flag of Mount Athos or Byzantium carries spiritual depth and reflects the religious connection to Mount Athos. When it comes to the flag of Byzantium, there are two features that are used as state symbols throughout the Empire. Namely, in question are Constantine's clamp and the double-headed eagle. Now the flag of Byzantium is presented with a coat of arms consisting of a black double-headed eagle in flight, armed with a sword in the right hand and a pattern in the left above which is a crown, on a gold background.
