Folk Beliefs and Customs for Saint Aranđel - Assembly of Holy Angels
Saint Michael the Archangel, who is celebrated on November 21, is one of the most important Orthodox saints in the Serbian tradition. This holiday, also known as Arandjelovdan, is one of the most common days of glory in Serbia, and it is especially celebrated by those who seek the protection and blessing of Archangel Michael, the guardian of the heavenly army.
In addition to religious services and family gatherings, many families adhere to old folk customs and beliefs related to this day, in order to bring happiness, health and peace to their homes. In this article, we will explore the deep symbolism and tradition of Aranđelovdan, as well as the customs that Serbian families follow in honor of St. Aranđel.
Who is Saint Archangel Michael?
According to Orthodox teaching, Archangel Michael is the leader of the heavenly army, the protector of believers and the guardian of the church from evil. Archangel Michael, according to tradition, protects people and guides them on the path of salvation. Because of his courage and dedication to fighting for good, he is often depicted with a sword or spear, defeating the forces of darkness. In the Serbian people, the Holy Archangel is a saint who ensures peace and security in the home, and many believe that he brings protection to every family that celebrates him as their patron saint.
Customs for St. Archangel's Day
1. Gathering the family and preparing a celebratory cake
As with most slavs, Arandjelov's Day is celebrated with a slavish cake, a candle and grain. The celebratory cake is a symbol of unity and spiritual strength of the family, while the celebratory candle is lit in honor of the saint.
The family traditionally gathers together, where everyone invokes the protection of Archangel Michael by offering cakes and praying. This act has a deep symbolism of gathering under the protection of divine blessing.
2. Folk belief about the "Patterning" of the Slavic cake
One of the interesting customs on Arandjelovdan is the coloring of the Slavic cake. Various symbols such as a cross, doves and flowers are often drawn on the cake, symbolizing faith, peace and love. Each symbol is believed to bring blessings and protection to the family.
3. Prohibition of heavy physical work
On Arandjelovdan, all hard work, such as digging, sewing and other physical activities, is avoided. According to popular belief, this day is dedicated to prayer and rest, in order to show respect to the saint. It is believed that working on this day can cause misfortune in the home and disturb the peace.
