October: The Feasts We Celebrate in October
October is the month when nature changes its colors and enters the golden autumn. As the leaves slowly fall to the ground, our hearts and homes are warmed with spiritual holidays. For Serbs, the month of October represents a rich treasury of Orthodox celebrations, traditions and customs that are passed down from generation to generation. Let's explore together which holidays we celebrate in October, what their meaning is and what are the interesting customs associated with them!
1. Holy Petka of Thorns (October 8)
Although not as well known as Saint Petka Paraskeva, Saint Petka Thorn is a saint to whom many people pray for help in healing. It is believed to help with eye problems and headaches. In some parts of Serbia, this day is marked as a vow and a special day for women.
Interesting fact: On the day of Holy Friday Thorn, in some regions no work is done with a needle or scissors, because it is believed that this can cause pain and wounds in the household.
2. Saint John the Theologian (October 9)
One of the most important apostles, Saint John the Theologian was a disciple of Jesus Christ and the author of one of the four gospels. His day is celebrated by families who wish for protection and wisdom.
Interesting fact: Many believers believe that St. John the Theologian was the only apostle who died a natural death, which distinguishes him among the apostles who mostly died as martyrs.
3. Holy Petka (October 14)
A saint who is known for her life filled with prayer, fasting and love for her neighbors. Good Friday is celebrated by many families throughout Serbia, especially in Banat and the eastern parts of the country. In addition to being the protector of women, she is also considered by many to be the protector of the sick and the poor.
Interesting fact: In some regions, it is believed that girls who want to find a good husband should fast and pray to Holy Friday, especially on the day of her glory.
4. Saint Thomas (October 19)
Thomas, also known as Unfaithful Thomas, is the apostle who expressed doubt about Jesus' resurrection until he touched his wounds. It is celebrated by many hosts who want protection from infidelity and lies.
Interesting fact: There is a popular belief that no work should be started on the day of St. Thomas, because "what Thomas closes, no one can open."
5. Saint Luke (October 31)
The holy apostle and evangelist Luke was a doctor by profession and a painter, and he is popularly known as the first icon painter, because it is believed that he painted the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is celebrated by doctors and medical workers, as well as by many believers who rely on his help in healing.
Interesting fact: According to popular belief, Saint Luke is also the patron saint of cattle. In many villages on that day, it was not allowed to do field or housework so that the cattle would not get sick.
Conclusion:
October is the month of spiritual rebirth, when Serbian families celebrate holidays with great respect for saints and customs. Whether the holidays are related to the protection of the home, family or personal health, they are an opportunity to gather relatives, exchange stories and remember the values that bind us together.
Spend this October in joy and celebration, and may every holiday bring you peace and prosperity!
