WELCOME TO ŠID - THE CITY OF SAVA ŠUMANOVIĆ
- If you want to experience Srem in the right sense, then a visit to the city of Šid and the villages of the Šid municipality is an ideal destination. The mosaic composed of history, art, rich and diverse Srem cuisine, archeology, different nationalities with their traditions and customs of the plains and hills that intertwine in a light rhythm as you travel through our municipality, is something that will certainly please tourists and leave a strong impression.
This is how intentional travelers are invited from the Šid Tourist Organization, with full rights. Because, as the poet says, "the ornate Srem is beautiful, and one of its pearls is precisely Šid."
It is tucked away on the beautiful slopes of Fruška Gora, and stretches at an altitude of a pleasant 104 meters, the eponymous municipality whose main center is actually the westernmost municipality of Srem district, and the city of Šid is in an incredible geographical position, because not only is it not far from Fruška Gora, already next to it in the north and south, flow our two big rivers - Sava and Danube. It has long been known that the people of Vojvodina know how to use everything that nature has given them, so Šid and the surrounding villages are widely known as a fruit and vineyard area.
What should you visit when visiting Šid?
First, beautiful nature adorns Šid and its surroundings. As we have already said, there is also the famous Fruška Gora, then the beautiful rivers Sava, Bosut and Studva. On this occasion, we especially emphasize the lesser-known fact that the Bosut is considered one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. It is rich in fish, but fishing and fishing on it are controlled, in order to prevent the devastation of fish in this very important river for the entire region.
In addition to fishing, you can also enjoy hunting in this rich nature, because in Vorovo, Vranjak and Morović there are arranged hunting grounds where rabbits, deer and pheasants live.
Apart from the beautiful nature, numerous cultural and historical monuments will also make you go for a walk, a tour and sightseeing.
Lovers of history and antiquities will certainly not miss the extremely valuable archeological collection "Gradina na Bosutu", with almost 6,500 exhibits from prehistory, the Bronze and Iron Ages. There are also religious buildings: the monastery in Privina glava, the church in Molovina, as well as the Gothic church in Morović.
What can we say when it comes to art lovers?!
For starters: Museum of Naive Art "Ilianum"
Next to each other in Šid are two exceptional museums - galleries. First, there is the Museum of Naive Art "Ilijanum", which is named after the Šid painter Ilija Bašičević - Bosilj (1895-1972). It was created by the artist donating his paintings to the city of Šid. Basicevic's paintings can be found in numerous domestic and foreign galleries and museums that collect works of naive art. The heirs of Carla Ponti and Sofia Loren, as well as the Rockefeller Foundation, have the largest number of Ilija's paintings.
And then the jewel: Sava Šumanović Gallery
Thanks to nobility and perseverance, ten years after the death of her only son, Sava Šumanović's mother gave the city of Šid a legacy of invaluable artistic and material value. The legacy was placed in the Šumanović family house, where the municipal court had been until then.
The art fund of the gallery in Šid has 417 works, of which 350 paintings are made with the oil on canvas technique and 67 sketches in various techniques (drawing, pastel, watercolor, diluted tempera). Most of the paintings belong to the last creative period, they were painted in Šid during the last decade.
In the immediate vicinity of the gallery, in the street that bears his name today, there is the Memorial House of Sava Šumanović. The family house, which is under the protection of the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, was bought by the municipality from the heirs and has been open to visitors since 1982. The painter spent his childhood and the last years of his life in this house.
The gallery is one of the most important museum institutions in Serbia. If, despite all the signposts towards the Gallery, the passenger gets lost, there will be no problems, because the children will also direct him to the street where he is. And he will advise him to visit the Memorial House of the great painter. And those simple, short conversations with the locals will easily convince him to sign at the entrances to the city
Welcome to the town of Sava Šumanovic
they are not a formal greeting to visitors.
To add numerous tourist events in Šid
Intended for gourmets and gourmets, the most famous tourist event is "Sremska kulenijada" in Erdevik, which brings together producers, distributors and lovers of kulen and other cured meat specialties, ham, sausages, with the offer of famous Erdevik wines, cheeses, honey, cakes.
The "Šid Cultural Summer" event has been held in Šid for many years, offering a colorful cultural and entertainment program for different ages every day during the event. Up to 25,000 people visit the event during 25 days.
For all those for whom "in vino veritas" is a meme, in Berkasovo near Šid, a "Sremska vinijada" is traditionally held, dedicated to wine lovers, producers and tasters.
