Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky was a great Russian prince and a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church.
He was born on May 30, 1220, as the son of Grand Duke Jaroslav Vsevolodovich.
When the Pope organized a crusade to conquer the Russian lands, Prince Alexander stood up to protect the Orthodox faith and in the battle at the mouth of the Izhora River, on the banks of the Neva, won a great victory over the Swedes on July 15, 1240, after which he received the nickname "Nevsky ".
His relics, discovered in 1380, were ceremoniously transferred to Petrograd in 1724 by order of Peter the Great and are located in the Lavra of St. Alexander Nevsky. The Russian Church canonized him primarily because of his Christian virtues, and over time stories about miracles related to his image were also created.
His memory is celebrated on November 23 and August 30.
