John the Baptist, John the Baptist or Johann the Bather, was a Jewish ascetic (one who renounces bodily pleasures for religious reasons) preacher from the 1st century who performed ritual baths in the Jordan River.
The Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates it on January 7 according to the Julian calendar, and on January 20 according to the Gregorian calendar, the birthday of St. John is celebrated on July 7 (June 24 according to the Julian calendar), and the day of his death is marked by the Feast of the Cutting (August 29 in Gregorian/September 11 in Julian).
St. John is one of the most popular feasts in Serbia - in terms of the number of concelebrants, it is in fourth place.
In Christianity, he is revered as a saint, hermit and martyr, the predecessor of Jesus.
John the Baptist called people to repent and turn to God. He was an important religious figure of the 1st century, whose movement was probably more massive than that of Jesus. He is best known for baptizing Jesus, who accepted his message.
Some essential elements of the John movement, such as fasting and baptism, probably entered early Christianity under the influence of John's disciples.
John is considered the patron saint of singers, musicians, tailors, tanners, furriers, wool weavers, harness makers, innkeepers, knife makers, grinders, prisoners, condemned to death, bird breeders, epileptics, baptisms, Malta, Jordan and a large number of cities around the world.
