The white angel is part of the composition The Myrrh-Bearer at Christ's Grave from the Church of the Ascension of Christ in the Mileševo Monastery and is one of the most famous frescoes in Serbia, but it is also one of the great works of European painting. It is considered one of the most beautiful works of Serbian and European art of the Middle Ages.
The picture shows the Angel of the Lord himself, dressed in a white chiton, sitting on a stone and pointing to the place of Christ's resurrection, i.e. his empty tomb, to the myrrh bearers. It is made with free, broad strokes and is characterized by monumentality and high plasticity in modeling.
The fresco is located on the south wall of the western aisle and was created in the 13th century as the work of unknown Greek authors, educated in Constantinople, Nicaea and Thessaloniki. In the 16th century, another fresco was painted over it, so the White Angel was hidden until the 20th century, when this church was restored and the upper painting was removed.
The image was part of the second public transmission via the Telstar satellite, on 23 July 1962.
