THE IMPERIAL FAMILY

The Romanov Imperial Family, headed by Tsar Nicholas II, the last Russian Tsar, represents one of the most important figures in Russian history. The family was tragically murdered in 1918, after the October Revolution, by the Bolsheviks, which marked the end of Russian imperial rule. Along with Tsar Nicholas, his wife, Empress Alexandra, and their children — Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Tsarevich Alexei — were killed.

The imperial family was canonized as martyrs in the Russian Orthodox Church in 2000, because of their deep faith, suffering and calm bearing of suffering. They are especially remembered for their devotion to the Russian people and modest way of life, despite their royal status.

The holy imperial martyrs became a symbol of faith and sacrifice, and their suffering and martyrdom is commemorated throughout the Orthodox world.
