  • The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates it on July 5 according to the Julian calendar.

Saint Sergius of Radonezh, born Bartholomew in the village of Varnita, became one of the most important Russian Orthodox saints. As a child, he learned to read, and due to poverty, he moved to Radonezh around 1328. After the death of his parents, Bartholomew retired to the Hotkovo-Pokrovsky Monastery with his brother Stefan, where he received the monastic rank under the name Sergej.

In 1345, he founded the monastery of the Holy Trinity, where he became the second abbot. His example of obedience, work and prayer inspired the monks, and the monastery became the center of spiritual life. Sergius founded more than 40 monasteries, performing many miracles, such as healing and resurrection.
