SAINT ALEXANDER OF NEVES

Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky was a great Russian prince and a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Prince of Novgorod, Kiev and Grand Duke of Vladimir.

Saint Alexander Nevsky is one of the most important Russian saints and military leaders. He was born in 1221, and became famous for his victory over the Swedes in the battle on the Neva River in 1240, after which he was nicknamed "Nevsky". He also defeated the Teutonic Knights at the Battle of the Ice on Lake Weiss in 1242. Because of these victories, he became a symbol of the defense of Orthodoxy and Russia.

As Prince of Novgorod and Vladimir the Great, Alexander Nevsky worked to preserve the Russian people under Mongol rule, carefully balancing military force and diplomacy. He was canonized for his courage, wisdom and spiritual devotion. His relics are kept in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg. The Orthodox Church celebrates it on November 23.
