THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD OF MUROM

The icon of the Virgin of Murom has a significant historical and spiritual role in the Russian Orthodox tradition. In the 12th century, the icon was brought from Kiev to Murom by Prince Constantine of Murom. In a key event, when idolaters in Murom plotted against the prince, he prayed fervently before the icon. He carried it with him before the conspiracy and thus forced the pagans to change their minds and accept Christianity.

The icon is also associated with Bishop Basil of Ryazan at the end of the 13th century, who prayed in front of it before, accused and persecuted, he escaped across the Oka River in a miraculous way, using his mantle as a raft. This event was instrumental in changing the seat of the diocese from Murom to Ryazan, where the icon continued to be kept.

The icon was known for many miracles and served as a spiritual refuge for people. They prayed before her for piety, mercy, protection and the gift of wisdom. Its artistic value is reflected in the detailed depiction of the Infant with a scroll in his hand, while the Virgin holds Christ in her arms, which symbolizes safety and maternal protection.

Although the original icon disappeared in 1929, a faithful copy of it can be found today in the Ryazan Cathedral's Borisogleb Cathedral.
