Our Lady of Ambulance

The Virgin Mary Help of Christians is an Orthodox icon kept in the monastery of Dohijar on Mount Athos.

The icon was painted in the 10th century, at the time of Abbot Neophyte.

According to the tradition of the monks of the Dohijara monastery, in front of the old monastery refectory, there was a very old icon of the Virgin painted on the wall. In front of this icon, therefore, there was a passage through which the fathers passed to the dining room. One night in the year 1664, a waiter named Neil, passing by the custom in front of the icon with lit candles, heard the words: "Don't pass by here with candles anymore and don't smell my icon." He did not attach great importance to this event and continued to pass through the same passage with lighted candles according to his custom.

A few days later he heard the same voice again and then went blind. After that, the monk Neil knelt across the holy icon, praying continuously for days and nights. After a few days, a voice came to him again: "Your prayer has been answered and may you be forgiven and may you see as before. Announce to the other ascetic fathers and brothers that I am the Mother of God the Logos and from God the protection of this holy monastery Archangel and help and powerful protector, who thinks about it as a defender and manager. And from now on, let the monks call on me for their every need, and I will quickly answer their prayers and those of all Orthodox Christians who devoutly turn to me, because my name is Quick Helper."

After that, Neil regained his sight. Since then, no one has passed there towards the refectory, but the place around the holy icon has been fenced off with great respect and dignity, and since it looks towards the west - and there was not much space - on the right side of the miracle-working icon, a holy temple decorated with every beauty, dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos, was built – to the miraculous Ambulance.

Every evening and every morning, a prayer canon is served in front of this holy icon.
